Veggies are ready!

The veggies are filling in and are pretty much ready to eat.... we sprouted so many lettuce and spinach to begin with that we are going to fill it in as we harvest so it looks like Edible landscaping...

Goats!

Yes, we have goats now and they are cute.  They are really taking a liking to our dog and slowly us.  They love to chase the chickens like our dog does behind the fence.

We have named them Mable and Syrup.. and are the OB variety which will be great for milk after they have are old enough and have been bread.  Oh Boy is that going to be interesting... for now they are fun and cute.

Rows vs. Staggering

When you put everything in a row you not only waste space, communicating linear thinking but also saying something about your relationship with control.  Keeping in mind this is only my opinion regarding small scale garden projects.  Large scale farmers need rows because of their tractors and other machines to help farm the crops.  As the veggies & herbs grow I imagine myself in the spaces between them as a little fairy or person being surrounded by shelter, food and comfort.  I know its a little weird but when you have a garden the emotional connection is different to your food, the feeling of being responsible for tending to something that is living has a profound affect on my daily mind state and every time I walk past my garden.  ;-)

Growth!

Two weeks later the sprouts have all sprouted and look vibrant and egar to begin their lives.  The starters look like they have rooted and some have almost doubled in size.  New growth is always exciting.  I start to think now about what my next rotation should be where to put all the new sprouted greens and I can't wait to get more starters.  ;-)

Chickens are big!  I will get a picture soon...

The chickens saga...

We are down to only 4 out the 7 chickens that we started with.  They were 5 weeks old two of them were/are plymouth black rock and five of them are/were orpingtons.  We don't the entire area covered and so we think a hawk is swooping down and grabbing them.

Our solutions:  add bird netting or some sort of cover and get more chickens hopefully older and hope they don't kill each other dominating the pecking order.
